Cenozoic deep-Sea temperatures and global ice volumes from Mg/Ca in benthic foraminiferal calcite
A deep-sea temperature record for the past 50 million years has been produced from the magnesium/calcium ratio (Mg/Ca) in benthic foraminiferal calcite. The record is strikingly similar in form to the corresponding benthic oxygen isotope (delta(18)O) record and defines an overall cooling of about 12 degrees C in the deep oceans with four main cooling periods. Used in conjunction with the benthi...
متن کاملSynchronization of cell division in Escherichia coli by elevated temperatures: a reinterpretation.
Synchronization of cell division resulting from exposure of Escherichia coli to elevated temperatures can be prevented by the presence of methionine. It is suggested that limitation of endogenous methionine at the elevated temperature might be the cause for the subsequent synchronization of cell division.
متن کاملProperties of a Statistical Model of Ice at Low Temperatures
A simple statistical model for ice is presented, based on a point charge model for H2O. To simulate this model, a Monte Carlo algorithm is constructed that samples proton configurations according to the Boltzmann distribution. The ground state of the model is numerically found to be an ordered nonferroelectric state with a unit cell of eight water molecules. The same structure has been previous...
متن کاملInfluence of water ice clouds on Martian tropical atmospheric temperatures
[1] The Reanalysis derived from the UK Mars general circulation model assimilation of Thermal Emission Spectrometer temperature and dust opacity retrievals at present provides the best estimate of the evolving state of the Martian atmosphere over the course of the Mars Global Surveyor mapping mission. A Control simulation has also been carried out using the same evolving dust distribution as th...
متن کاملInteractions of adsorbed CO₂ on water ice at low temperatures.
We present a computational study into the adsorption properties of CO2 on amorphous and crystalline water surfaces under astrophysically relevant conditions. Water and carbon dioxide are two of the most dominant species in the icy mantles of interstellar dust grains and a thorough understanding of their solid phase interactions at low temperatures is crucial for understanding the structural evo...
